Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 5:2 Diet?

The 5:2 diet is a type of intermittent fasting where you eat normally for five days a week and restrict your calorie intake for the other two days (fasting days).

How many calories can I eat on fasting days?

On your two fasting days, the general guideline is:

  • Women: 500 calories per day.

  • Men: 600 calories per day.

  • Note: Some modern versions allow up to 800 calories for better sustainability.

Do the fasting days have to be back-to-back?

No. It is highly recommended to have at least one “normal” eating day between your fasting days (e.g., fasting on Monday and Thursday). This prevents fatigue and makes the routine easier to follow.

What can I eat on “normal” days?

You can eat your regular diet, but the goal is not to “overeat” or binge to compensate for the fasting days. Focus on balanced meals with protein, healthy fats, and fiber.

Can I drink coffee or tea while fasting?

Yes. You can drink water, black coffee, and tea (without sugar or milk) freely. These help manage hunger and keep you hydrated without adding calories.

Is the 5:2 diet safe for everyone?

While effective for many, you should consult a doctor before starting if you:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding.

  • Have a history of eating disorders.

  • Have Type 1 diabetes or specific medical conditions.

  • Are under 18 years old.

Will I lose muscle mass?

As long as you consume enough protein on your “normal” days and maintain some resistance training (exercise), muscle loss is minimal compared to standard calorie-restricted diets.
